Grim Fandango Remastered Grim Fandango is a fun adventure game by LucasArts that was published in 1998 for Windows. Grim Fandango was remastered by Double Fine Productions and released in 2015. Manny is a travel agent from the Department of Death and discovers some dirty dealings within his. Grim Fandango Remastered received its brush-up in 2015, with Day of the Tentacle Remastered a year after that, and Full Throttle Remastered following in 2017. The original games were published. Grim Fandango's epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better than when it won GameSpot's Game of the Year award upon its original launch. Comedy is one of the most difficult things to convey in video games. This is partly due to the pacing. A great deal of comedy is about timing, and when the audience is in control of how fast things play out, comic timing can be finicky and unpredictable.Maybe that's why adventure games seem like the perfect place to make people laugh. In the days before The Walking Dead, point-and-click adventure games acted like coin operated dialogue machines. Input a puzzle, and a ready-made bit of conversation dispenses in capsule form—perfect and unaltered by the player's actions.
Tim Schafer is often credited with being one of the funniest people in video games for good reason. It could just as easily be said, however, that he was one of the first to recognize adventure games' inherent usefulness as a comedy tool. Grim Fandango was the last adventure game Schafer worked on as part of the now-defunct LucasArts, and its commercial failure represented the end of a golden age for the genre, cementing the game’s legend in certain circles.
Grim Fandango’s near-mythical stature has only increased by the fact that the game has never been re-released or ported to modern hardware since its initial release. Scarcity makes the heart grow fonder, in this case, and so the adventures of protagonist Manny Calavera, Meche, and Glottis through the Land of the Dead have become the perfect candidates for this new 'remastered' edition.
Graphical and pacing hitches
It doesn't hurt that this Day of the Dead-inspired comedy has an art style which translates well into today’s higher resolutions. Grim Fandango was coded in an era where polygons were actually recognizable as such: characters are blocky, flat, and monochromatic, obvious even under the new shaders, retouched textures, and sharper corners of the remake.
Most games of the era suffer when upscaled to hi-res displays, but Grim Fandango was smartly (or perhaps unintentionally) future-proofed against this kind of issue. The game’s piñatas, skeletons, and the Land of the Dead's bureaucratic concrete are already flat, while the pulpier, art deco backgrounds never needed to change at all. What Remastered does is remove any jagged aliasing, and it sharpens the colors in such a way that makes the game appear more 'true' to its target aesthetic.
AdvertisementUnfortunately, there is a significant selection of graphical bugs that mar what would otherwise be the definitive version of this 17-year-old classic. Held objects float with gravity-defying stubbornness, for instance, and whole chunks of character models seemingly dislodge themselves momentarily during conversation. These bugs are all the more distracting now that the game is being rendered so much more crisply and cleanly. It’s hard to focus on a line’s humorous delivery when the character delivering it has a mouth guard floating two feet in front of his teeth.
Grim Fandango also suffers in retrospect thanks to nearly two decades of advancement in video game pacing. 1998 wasn't just a time of low-fidelity graphics. It was also a time when players had a lot more patience for adventure game puzzles—or at least I did.
The thing is, Grim Fandango is slow. You'll walk into a room, fill Manny's infinite inner pockets with pseudo-random trash, and leave, only to return and repeat the process multiple times if you missed some important cue and need a fresh batch of expended items. All the backtracking and the guesswork is made worse by all the just-longer-than-I'd-like animations: climbing, walking, and even unfolding Manny's reaper scythe all slow things down just a tad too much for my tastes.
Since Grim Fandango didn’t have highly expressive faces to help sell a scene, it made sense for the game to have broad, sweeping movements to convey the characters’ personalities. Add that to the plodding, often esoteric puzzles, though, and there are some lengthy pauses between depositing that kernel of effort and receiving the capsule of a joke.
Just be sure to save after every long pause. For whatever reason, Grim Fandango Remastered has not added the kind of autosave feature that’s become practically standard for games in the last few decades. That usually wouldn’t be much of an issue in the relatively consequences-free world of an adventure game, but occasional game-freezing bugs make frequent manual saving a necessary chore. Grim Fandango's dialogue may be fun, but it's less endearing when you have to backtrack through 45 minutes worth of those long animations just to get back to where you were.

That said, when those jokes do land they're still seriously amusing. Grim Fandango is a wonderful example of Tim Schafer at his finest, and the game will bring warm chuckles to anyone who’s played The Secret of Monkey Island or Psychonauts. The humor and heart is audible in every exchange, whether it's with an angry, dead clown channeling Jack Nicholson or an elemental spirit raised for the sole purpose of supercharging town cars.
The space between the exchanges is filled with a pulp-action spectacle on a scale that seems all the larger for the fully-realized world it takes place in. There are rules and borders to the Ninth Underworld, and even though those rules are ridiculous and broken as quickly as the characters can explain them, they give a sense of space that makes you care for the world’s inhabitants.
Much credit has to go to those characters' voice actors, whose deadpan delivery sells the insanity. Their lines, along with the game's music, have also been remastered for Remastered, and this comes off sounding as good as the game (usually) looks.
There’s also a director's commentary that can be turned on with the press of a button, featuring Schafer alongside programmers, artists, animators, and designers talking about the individual inspirations that led to various choices in the game's design.
The commentary isn’t unwelcome, and it's often quite an interesting look into how a passion project like Grim Fandango comes together, but it just isn't particularly well-implemented here. Once activated, you're treated to a several-second blurb about pneumatic tubes or a particular mural. Leave the scene showing that particular object, however, and the commentary stops, meaning you have to stand in place and wait for the commentary to finish before move on to the next scene.
These and other 'remastered' elements of Grim Fandango Remastered aren't perfect, but neither is the original game, as it turns out. Its ponderous pace often gets in the way of its stellar personality, in fact. That doesn’t mean you should shy away from a slice of gaming history, though. When the game does hit its marks, it's with the same verve that its legacy promises.
The good

· Take a look at the tube by pressing'E' to examine it.
· Press 'U' to open the tube. (Mannyopens the tube and takes out a message from Don Copal telling you
there’s been a poisoning.)
· Pick up the deck of cards onthe table on the other side of the room
· Leave the office now.
· Talk to Eva, the secretary

· Check the door. It's locked.

· Notice the bowl like thing. Maybewe can entice the birds away from their eggs with some food.
· Put the cat balloon in it.
· Sprinkle the bread and look out,here come the pigeons.
· When they get to the bottom ofthe bowl the balloon will pop scaring them all away.
· Now head over to the eggs andgrab a couple.

· Now you need to get Eva yourteeth.

· Put the mouth piece in the machineand it will fill with the gunk.

The Petrified Forest
· Turn around and exit the screen.
· Glottis is here crying over beingfired. He irrationally rips his heart out and throws it over his shoulder.He quickly collapses.

Spider’s Lair
· Go get his heart.
· Head in the direction he threwit. You’ll find it stuck in a spider web.
· Go to the pile of bones one theother side of the spider web.
· Pick up as many bones as youcan.
·4 Toss one into the spider web.
· Use your scythe on it. (It becomesa sling shot and shoots the heart out.)
· Go back to Glottis and pick upthe heart.
· Use it on Glottis. (He is nowrevived.)

· Try to pick it up. It will spinaround quickly.

Tree Farm

· Glottis will climb the tree.
· While he’s up there flip theswitch again.

· Stop and talk to Lupe, but justfor a second.

· Go through the open door.
· Pick up the can opener sittingon the very large can of cat food.
· Go back out and up the stairs.
· When you get to the top, noticethe betting window on the right. There is an opening to the left of thebetting window.
· Enter the doorway and down thehall.
· Ride the elevator to the top.
· Enter the arched doorway thatleads to the kitchen.
· Take the turkey baster.
· Wait a minute and a waiter willcome in.
· When he enters the pantry, shutthe doors behind him and block them with the scythe.
If you don’t do it in time, you will haveanother chance.
· After Glottis comes in and emptiesthe keg, climb the ladder and use the can opener on the keg.
In the elevator with the forklift
· Climb in by pressing ‘u’. Youwill go for a ride.
· Climb into the forklift by walkingto the other side and pressing ‘’u’.
· Press the up arrow to drive intothe elevator even though the door is closed.
· Turn the forklift around andmove it as far to the right as possible.
· Jump out and press the elevatorbutton.
· Climb back in the forklift anddrive it all the way forward so the forks are underneath the right sideof the gate.
· Keep the up arrow held down.
· There is a secret floor and theforklift will stop you.
· When you do stop, get out andwalk around to the other side of the forklift.
· Pull the lever by pressing ‘u’.

· Take his dog tags.
· Show Toto the note you foundin the coat. He gives you a picture with the number six.
· Go back to the Morgue.
Morgue
· Give the metal detector to theMembrillo
· Use the tags on one body whilehe is using the detector on the other. He’ll find them and declare Naranjadead. He calls to let Velasco know.

· Go talk to the sea bees
· Give them the union book.
· This will get Terry arrested.

· He shows you a picture and youswap when he’s not looking.
· You now have a picture of Nickand Olivia kissing.
· Take the picture to Nick andshow him.

On Board the Limbo
· Go inside the ship (The doorwayis on the left.) You find your entire crew has been sprouted. Glottis savesyou.
Engine Room
· Push the red button on the starboardside (right). This raises the anchor.
· Look at the controls. Press ‘u’while looking at them.
· Pull down the right control bypushing the right arrow key.
· Back away from the controls.(Press ‘u’)
· Press the starboard button again.
· Press it one more time to raiseit. It will hook on to the port anchor.
· Look out the starboard porthole.
· Use your scythe on the anchor.It will hook on to the porthole.
· Press the port side button.
· Use the controls again.
· Pull down both controls (Pressthe down arrow.) The ship rips in half and then sinks.
Cut scene (Manny and Glottis escape fromthe assassins.)
Bottom of the Ocean
· Walk toward the near side of thescreen to the edge of the light. Glottis tries to stop you.
· A little man, Chepito, will comewalking by.
· Talk to him as soon as Mannyturns his head towards him.
· End the conversation.
· When Chepito walks away followand press the ‘u’ key to grab him. Glottis will pick him up. You all walkoff to a sub where an octopus is grabbing people and stuffing them inside.
· Walk around the edge on the rightside of the screen, towards the large rock.
· Look at the thingys on the rock.
· Walk around the right side ofthe rock. Chepito gets caught and this distracts the octopus, allowingyou access to the sub. Off you go.
Cut scene (Manny and Glottis stowaway tothe edge of the world.)
· Move towards the door on the farside of the screen. You will go up an elevator.
· Move forward and right.
· Go through the opening left ofthe door with the wheel. You will enter a room.

· Go talk to Chepito. He is workingon the near side of the screen.)

· Give him the hammer. He givesyou a drill.
· Give him the stockings. He givesyou a sprouter.
· Go back towards the elevatorand turn right.
Conveyor Belt
· Look at the handle.
· Pull the handle to make it goin reverse.
· Climb on.
· Turn around and climb up thebelt.
· Climb up the set of stairs onthe left. You are now in a crane.
The Crane
· Use the arrows to move it to theother side.
· Lower the scoop by pushing thedown arrow.
· Get out (Press ‘u’)
· Walk down the ramp in the middleof the screen
The Beach
· Walk to the scoop.
· use the drill to detach the scoopfor the chain.
· Go back up the ramp
· Go back up the stairs into thecrane.
· Raise the chain
· Drive to the other side.
· Lower the chain.
· Get out
· Walk towards the belt.
· Go down
· Get off
· Pull the lever. The chain willhook around the anchor.
· Climb back up to the crane.
· Raise the chain. You just savedGlottis.
Cut scene (The Lamancha rises from thesea.)
· Turn around and go off the screen.
· Go back to the room Meche isin.
· Give her the gun while lookingat her.

Dom’s Office
· She tries to escape. But is lockedup.
· Walk out of Dom’s office, throughthe little room, down the hall to the door with the wheel o n it.
· Use the drill on the door. Alock is revealed.
· Look at the wheel.
· You need to set the flat sideof the tumblers with the right side of the door so that there is a smallopening between the tumblers and the door.
· Turn the wheel right until thetop tumbler is moving. Keep moving until the flat side is lined up.
Turn the wheel left until the third tumblerfrom the bottom is moving. Keep moving, slowly, until it
is lined up.
Turn the wheel right until the secondtumbler is moving. Keep moving until it is lined up.
Turn the wheel left until the bottom tumbleris lined up.
· Put your scythe in the spacebetween the tumblers and the door. (If this doesn’t work, the tumblersaren’t quite in place.
· Pull the handle of the door.
· Go in.
· Shut the door.
· Walk towards the door.
· Use the scythe above the doorwhen Manny looks up. This opens a secret door. Meche comes out.
· Go into the secret room
Secret Room
· Look up at the sprinkler system.
· Use the scythe. Water will startpouring out, but nothing happens.
· Turn the wheel on the right sideof the screen to drain the water. (This may be a way out)
· Leave the secret room into theother room
· Walk to the bottom of the screen.
· Pick up the ax. (You can onlymove backwards)
· Back up into the secret room.
· Move the ax directly over theblue square in the middle of the room.
· Drop the ax by pressing “u’.(This may take several tries to get the right spot)
· The tile breaks and a drain isrevealed.
Beach
· You, Meche and Glottis are nowon the beach.
· Walk off the screen.
· Go back to the crane.
· Lower the chain.
Cut scene (Escape from the coral mines.)
· Raise the chain. This rips outthe coral crusher and you’re sailing away. Dom tries to stop you . Youjump on the sub.
· Take out your scythe.
· Turn around. Use the scythe onthe eyeball.

YEAR FOUR
Outside the Train Station
· Walk all the way down the stairs.There are two trucks and a coffin.
· Look at the coffin
· Open the coffin. Bruno pops upand gives you your mug back.
· Go back up. You hear Meche callingyou.
· The #9 arrives with Dom and goesstraight to hell.
· Enter the doorway
Inside the Train Station
· Go off the bottom of the screen.Chepito is here walking in a fountain.
· Talk to Chepito. He hops outand walks off.

· Give the bottle to Glottis. Hetakes off to the Blue Casket for more.

· Open the cabinet on the right.You will pick up a bottle of liquid nitrogen.
· Go back to the Bone Wagon.

· Use the nitrogen on the gelatin.
· Walk to the back of the boneWagon.
· Diffuse the bomb by pressing‘p’ while looking at it.

· Pick up the coffee pot. It’son the warmer on the new side of the screen.
· Climb the ladder. It’s to theleft of the Thunder boys.
· Turn right.
· Walk forward over the cast members.
· Dump the coffee on them by pressing‘u’.
· Look at the snow grinder (leftside)
· Use arm on snow grinder.
· Pick it up.
· Go down the ladder.
· Enter the dressing room. (Downthe short flight of stairs.) You will come out all made up.
· Leave backstage.
· Go to the casino.
Casino
· Walk down to the slot area.
· Talk to the man in the trenchcoat.
· Talk again.
· Talk to Meche. She will tellyou to get lost.
· Talk to her again.
· Use the sheet on Charlie.
· Go back and talk to trench coatguy. You will end up at the bathroom now.
· Go into the bathroom. You comeout in a new suit.
· Go back to Glottis.
Sewers
· Continue behind Glottis.
Dark Sewers
· Go towards the dark entrance onthe top of the screen.
· Use the grinder. This will createa lighted path.
· Enter through the doorway.
Cut scene
· Glottis is with you now and analligator comes out to accost you.
· use the remote to raise the BoneWagon.
· Move the Bone Wagon as far asit will go.
· Exit to the ledge by pressing‘u’. (If you aren’t allowed on the ledge then you haven’t gone far enoughin the Bone wagon.)
· Walk to the end of the ledge.
· Pull out the remote.
· Climb half way down the ladder.
· Use the remote when the alligatorturns around. His tail gets caught under the BW.
· Continue down the ladder andexit off the bottom of the screen.
Florist
· Enter the florists shop. Bowsleyis trembling under the counter.
· Look at the ball of tape on topof the door.
· Use your scythe on the ball oftape. You will now exit.
· Enter again. Bowsley will giveyou a gun and ammo which looks like a can of sproutella.
· Go back to the casino.
Casino
· Talk to the elevator guy. He’llask you a question. The answer is on the keno board behind you. Look atthe numbers, back away, come back and talk again. Whatever new number isnow on the board is the answer to the question. You may have to back awaya couple times.
Hector’s office
· Talk to Celso.

· Walk up the hill to the greenhouse.Hector is here and sprouts you.
· Use the liquid nitrogen on yourself
· Go back to the car.
· Look inside. Sal’s head is here.
· Go to the suitcase now that Oliviahas been eliminated.
· Open it.
· Take Sal’s ticket.
· Walk up behind the greenhouse.Keep going behind it.
· Walk around. The ticket willstart jumping. Sal’s body is on the right half of the greenhouse. Whenyou’ve found it the ticket will jump out of your hand. You will dig uphis body.

· Search Sal’s body. You will geta key.
· Go back to the car.
· Use the key on the trunk.
· Go to the water tank.
· Shoot the water tank with thesproutella.
· Go back up to the greenhouse.
